The Theta-Gamma Neural Code

Starting from the fact that theta and gamma frequency oscillations occur in the same brain regions and interact one with the other more evidence is reviewed pointing to the idea that this cross-frequency coupling can serve to represent multiple items in an ordered way. For example in the hippocampus different spatial information is represented in different gamma subcycles of a theta cycle. It is concluded that those couplings are essential both in sensory and memory processes.
