Direct detection of a single photon by humans

" ... probability of reporting a single photon is modulated by the presence of an earlier photon, suggesting a priming process that temporarily enhances the effective gain of the visual system on the timescale of seconds."

The mechanism which enables detection is unknown, and moreover, exists the question if is the mechanism unique to vision or could it tell us something more general on how other systems could detect weak signals in the presence of noise.
