The 808 nm and 980 nm infrared laser irradiation affects spore germination and stored calcium homeostasis: A comparative study using delivery hand-pieces with standard (Gaussian) or flat-top profile

Authors found that light directly affects the stored Ca2+ homeostasis, independent of the mitochondrial respiratory chain activities. Ca2+ in turn has the capacity to regulate spore germination. So cell can respond quickly to the photonic stimulus through a different pathway than the known mitochondrial chromophore.

They say that the effect is probably mediated by the water molecules.
